The idea here is that as we grow and learn, some new ideas that come to us require not only learning, but unlearning as well. Some new ideas and information can enter into our awareness in a perfectly compatible and friendly way, and everything that was already in place previously stays put (learnings). In other cases, the new information overlaps current understanding or even directly contradicts it, requiring something to get materially edited, rearranged, or evicted altogether (unlearnings).

The concept of a learning versus an unlearning is described well below from the assignment instructions. The main revisions I’ve made are primarily to provide additional context for those not familiar with the course. Based on content from our Life Design courses, these animated videos are a resource for vocational wayfinding and career education. You can expect 3-5 hours of homework each week in addition to the 2 hours of class. Aside from some light reading and videos, homework will have you out in the world doing things and then reflecting on those experiences.

Common Ground: Designing Your Family Life

Topics include the integration of work and worldviews, ideation techniques, a portfolio approach to thriving, designing to increase balance and energy and how to prototype all aspects of your life. We also touch on the realities of engaging the workplace, and practices that support vocation formation throughout your life. This is an experiential class that includes seminar-style discussions, personal written reflections, guest speakers, and individual mentoring/coaching. The capstone assignment is the creation of an “Odyssey Plan” focusing on taking action in the 3-5 years following your Stanford graduation. How should you respond to existential anxiety, peer pressure, or a crisis? Will a religious, scientific, or artistic life make you feel more at home in the universe?

There are many great opportunities that fit my interests and objectives, but after a certain point the experience will be what I make of it, so it’s pointless to question whether an opportunity is the absolute best I could have been offered. If it’s a role in an interesting space that will give me a significant opportunity to both learn and make an impact, that’s something I can be confident signing up for. Thus, to embrace this idea, I had to unlearn the idea that I needed to have the next 10 years figured out, and guest speakers’ experiences really demonstrated the value of not having or following a plan. Now, I’m comfortable not having a confident answer for what I want to be doing 10 years from now and am solely focused on determining what makes the most sense for the next couple of years. Over the course of the quarter, we completed a variety of assignments. Several were focused around journaling (logging screen time over the course of the week, reflecting on moments of being stuck, moments of gratitude, moments of flow, etc.).

Design thinking is a human-centered approach to problem solving and innovation through prototype iteration. It is highly collaborative and a hands-on process for conceiving new solutions and getting unstuck. Design thinking emphasizes learning by doing and through feedback and iteration, allows students to make ideas real in the world. This approach lends itself especially well to the challenge of designing your life and vocation, large and vaguely defined tasks, because is allows you to start where you are - and build from there.

At the end of the day, it’s our strengths that will be the main drivers of our success, and you can surround yourself with people who complement your skills to mitigate your weaknesses. Over the course of the past year, I’ve been asked what my 10-year plan is over and over again, whether it be in interviews for internships, informational interviews, or just through networking and sharing that I’m finishing up college. I never really knew what to say, and based on these conversations, it seemed like not having a compelling answer was problematic. These were the kinds of questions I had started to ask myself. Some videos have built-in exercises, like creating your own "love, play, work, health" balance sheet to reframe how you view your life. Since it was filmed live, you also get to passively experience an in-person classroom by listening to participants' thoughts and questions.
